Topics for week commencing Monday 20th May

7X3: Interpret scales of measure for mass and convert between metric measurements. Interpret scales of measure for capacity and convert between metric measurements. Find fractions of shapes, numbers and quantities. Functional skills.

7Y1: Functional skills.

8X1: Round numbers to powers of ten, and round decimals to nearest whole, 1 and 2 decimal places. Use rounding to make estimates. Multiply and divide by any integer powers of 10. Substitute into expressions and formulae.

9X1: Recall and use the formulae for the area of a triangle, rectangle and parallelogram. Find the area of a trapezium. Calculate the perimeter and area of compound shapes made from triangles, rectangles and other shapes. Find the surface area of simple shapes (prisms) using the formulae for triangles, rectangles and other shapes. Convert between metric units of area. Find the circumference and area of circles. Find the perimeters and areas of semi-circles and quarter-circles. Calculate the lengths of arcs and the areas of sectors of circles. Find the surface area of a cylinder. Find the area of a segment of a circle given the radius and length of the chord.

10X4: Draw and plot cumulative frequency tables and graphs. Use cumulative frequency graphs to find median, quartiles and interquartile range. Draw box plots from a cumulative frequency graph. Compare the measures of spread between a pair of box plots/cumulative frequency graphs. Interpret box plots to find median, quartiles, range and interquartile range.

10Y2: Share a quantity in a given ratio. Interpret map/model scales as a ratio.

11X2: Examination paper practice.

The maths department certainly rose to the challenge at the ‘Bond’ themed Year 11 Prom last night! Both staff and students had a fantastic evening at Beamish Hall, dancing the night away until the early hours.
Looking ahead, we’d also like to wish good luck to all of our Year 11 students in their upcoming GCSE maths exams! The whole department is already looking forward to watching you opening those envelopes in August…

Manga High

Manga High

As promised, here’s the link to Manga High for my Year 8 students. Use the user ID and password you’ve been provided with to log in to the site. There are three challenges to attempt, but you may wish to explore and try some of the other features of the website too.

I’m looking forward to seeing who makes it to the top of the leaderboards and hearing your feedback on this site!

Here’s a great video on finding the surface area of a cylinder from VividMaths. This should also be helpful to my Year 8 students who have a similar question on their homework this week. However, their problem involves working out the surface area of the cylinder, including the top and bottom. This means calculating the area of both circles, not just one!

Check out ‘The Metric Film’, a promotional movie made in 1975 that attempted to convince Americans to convert to the metric system. Thirty-eight years later and the U.S.A. is still using the Imperial system of measurements…
